Jarren Duran started the game with a home run, followed by Masataka Yoshida’s two-run single, helping the Boston Red Sox break a four-game losing streak by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3. Boston had not won a game since defeating Houston the previous Wednesday. This victory also ended the Blue Jays’ five-game winning streak, although Toronto has still managed to win 10 of their last 15 games, positioning them to potentially climb out of the bottom of the AL East with just one month left in the season.
Additional runs for Boston were brought in by David Hamilton, Triston Casas, and Wilyer Abreu. Will Wagner hit his first career home run for Toronto, and Daulton Varsho added a solo home run in the ninth inning. Duran hit his 20th home run of the season, while Hamilton, Casas, and Abreu contributed with RBIs during the game.
Cooper Criswell pitched 3 1/3 innings for Boston, allowing one run on five hits and three walks. Greg Weissert (3-2) received the win with 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings. Yariel Rodríguez (1-6) of the Blue Jays gave up six earned runs on eight hits over five innings.
Boston catcher Danny Jansen displayed remarkable defense during the game, preventing two runs with his exceptional play. Jansen made a crucial tag out at home plate and later executed a double play to end an inning.
In other news, veteran pitcher Rich Hill rejoined the Red Sox roster, making him the only active player with the chance to appear in a game in each of the past 20 seasons if he pitches in 2024. The Red Sox made some roster moves, including placing Rafael Devers on the bench due to shoulder soreness, placing Lucas Sims on the injured list, designating Brad Keller for assignment, and recalling Greg Weissert.
The next game will feature RHP Chris Bassitt starting for the Blue Jays against RHP Brayan Bello for the Red Sox.
