Will Power, the 43-year-old Australian IndyCar driver, celebrated his recent win at Portland International Raceway by singing a verse of “Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi during a news conference microphone check. Power’s victory in Portland cut into points leader Alex Palou’s lead, making the championship battle a close competition between the two drivers with three races left in the season.
Power, who won his second IndyCar title in 2022, signed a two-year contract extension with Team Penske in early 2023, expressing his commitment to staying in IndyCar. Despite rumors of retirement circulating, Power emphasized that he is not planning to leave the sport any time soon.
Having endured a challenging season last year due to personal distractions, including his wife’s illness, Power has bounced back in 2023 to win three races, showing a return to form in his race craft. His recent win in Portland reduced Palou’s championship lead from 66 to 54 points.
With only three races remaining in the season, the championship battle is primarily between Palou and Power, both vying for their third IndyCar title. Power is focused on maintaining his performance in the upcoming races, aiming to close the gap in points and secure another championship.
Looking ahead to the final races at Milwaukee Mile and Nashville Superspeedway, Power, with his experience and success on ovals, sees an opportunity to capitalize on his strengths. Conversely, Palou, who lacks experience on ovals, faces a challenge in competing with Power on these tracks.
Reflecting on his journey in the sport, Power recalled his humble beginnings in America in 2005 when he first tested in the Champ Car Series at Portland. He views Portland as a significant location in his career and an important reminder of his passion for racing and dedication to IndyCar.
Expressing his love for the sport and the sense of accomplishment it brings, Power emphasized his reluctance to retire, highlighting his fulfillment in pursuing his racing dreams and achieving success in IndyCar. He looks forward to continuing his career and facing the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead.
