Ukraine has unveiled a new weapon named “Palianytsia,” which combines the features of a missile and a drone, allowing the country to target distant locations within Russia without relying on allies for permission. The weapon was developed out of necessity due to Russia’s aerial dominance since the start of the conflict in February 2022. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the existence of the Palianytsia on Ukraine’s 33rd Independence Day. The weapon was first used to target a Russian military installation in occupied territory, demonstrating its range of up to 700 kilometers, comparable to the U.S.-supplied ATACMS missile.
Despite receiving long-range weapons from the United States and other Western allies, Ukraine is restricted from targeting deep into Russia to avoid escalating the conflict. The new weapon aims to strike Russian military infrastructure far beyond border regions. Ukrainian officials aim to scale up production of the Palianytsia to increase their strategic capabilities and surprise Russia with unexpected strikes. The development of the weapon has been a significant goal for Ukraine, with specialists working on the project from scratch, ensuring its secrecy and independence from past Soviet projects.
The cost of each Palianytsia missile is reported to be under $1 million, with plans to involve the private sector for further cost reductions. Ukrainian military technology minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, highlighted the importance of private sector involvement, pointing out that private companies have become main suppliers of drones to the Ukrainian army. The new weapon is part of Ukraine’s efforts to innovate and adapt to the evolving battlefield, where both sides have utilized unconventional tactics and technology.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, emphasized the deadly consequences of Russia’s long-range missile attacks, underscoring the need for effective defense systems. Fedorov expressed confidence that Ukraine’s newfound independence in weapon production would enhance its military capabilities and bolster its confidence in countering Russian aggression. The new weapon symbolizes Ukraine’s determination to assert its sovereignty and defend against external threats, particularly from Russia’s vast military presence.
