Tropical Storm Gilma has intensified in the eastern Pacific Ocean and is anticipated to stay clear of any landmasses this week. As of early Monday, there were no coastal watches or warnings in place for the storm, situated approximately 625 miles (1,005 kilometers) southwest of the southern end of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. Gilma was upgraded to tropical storm status on Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph) and a westward movement at around 13 mph (21 kph). Meteorologists predict that Gilma will gradually strengthen over the next several days.
Meanwhile, in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Ernesto is causing powerful swells to move towards the U.S. East Coast, leading to hazardous rip currents and prompting numerous rescue operations.
