The Tampa Bay Rays secured a victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday with a thrilling 12th-inning RBI single by Dylan Carlson, securing an 8-7 win. Despite squandering a six-run lead, the Rays managed to complete a three-game sweep. The winning run came after Jonny DeLuca’s sacrifice bunt and a subsequent walk to Taylor Walls set the stage for Carlson’s game-winning hit to left field.
Justin Martinez of the Diamondbacks narrowly escaped a bases-loaded, no-out predicament in the 11th inning. On the pitching side, Edwin Uceta of the Rays claimed his first major league win after striking out two batters in a scoreless 12th inning.
Both teams saw offensive highlights with runs scored in extra innings. Drew Rasmussen and Tyler Alexander of the Rays had a combined no-hit bid disrupted in the seventh inning by a single from Corbin Carroll. The Diamondbacks rallied, with Carroll hitting a two-run homer in the eighth, and Adrian Del Castillo tying the game with a three-run homer off Rays closer Pete Fairbanks in the ninth.
Injury concerns arose for the Diamondbacks as star Ketel Marte seemed to reinjure his left ankle during a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth. The team is already dealing with absences from key players like Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno due to injuries.
The Diamondbacks, despite their recent three-game losing streak, maintain a solid record and a wild-card spot in the NL. The Rays, on the other hand, gained momentum with this sweep against the Diamondbacks.
Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks had no announced starters for their upcoming game in Miami, while the Rays are set to send RHP Taj Bradley to face Oakland’s RHP Joe Boyle on Monday night.
