Perdue recalls 167,000 pounds of chicken nuggets due to presence of metal wire

Perdue Foods is conducting a recall of more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders due to reports of metal wire being found in some of the products. The recall applies to specific lots of Perdue Breaded Chicken Tenders, Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets. Perdue and the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) initiated the recall after receiving customer complaints.

Around 167,171 pounds of the affected products are suspected to be contaminated with a foreign material, specifically a thin strand of metal wire, which was mistakenly introduced during the manufacturing process. Despite no confirmed injuries or adverse reactions linked to the consumption of these products so far, Perdue decided to recall all affected packages as a precautionary measure.

Consumers are advised to check their freezers for the recalled chicken products, identifiable by specific product codes and a best buy date of March 23, 2025, with establishment number “P-33944” on the packaging. These items were distributed nationwide. Individuals in possession of the recalled chicken are encouraged to either discard it or return it to the store of purchase. Perdue is providing full refunds to affected customers who can contact the company at 866-866-3703.

Foreign object contamination, such as the presence of metal, plastic, rocks, or insects in food products, is a significant cause of recalls in the United States. Last November, Tyson Foods had to recall close to 30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets due to metal fragments discovered in the dinosaur-shaped products. This incident underscores the importance of food safety and quality control measures in the production process to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
