Jordan Spieth to undergo left wrist surgery, ending his season

0

Jordan Spieth has decided to end his season after a single FedEx Cup playoff event in order to address a lingering issue with his left wrist. The golfer disclosed his plans for surgery on the troublesome wrist, explaining that he needs to have it operated on urgently due to a torn sheath that holds the tendon in place. This injury has been persisting for the past 16 months, with Spieth attempting various treatments without success. Following a disappointing finish in the FedEx Cup that left him outside the top 50, Spieth now has the luxury of time on his side to focus on his recovery.
Spieth mentioned that the typical recovery period for the surgery is around three months, with physical therapy beginning after six weeks. Despite not having a pressing reason to rush back into competition, he acknowledged that he will take a slow and cautious approach to his rehabilitation. This recent setback marks the second time Spieth has failed to progress past the initial postseason round, with his current ranking placing him outside the top 70 needed to advance in the playoffs.
Throughout the 2023 season, Spieth had an impressive start with multiple top-six finishes before his wrist injury forced him to withdraw from the Byron Nelson tournament. Subsequent to the injury, his performance was notably impacted, resulting in only a few notable finishes. Despite the challenges he faced on the course, Spieth emphasized his determination to return stronger following the surgery. Reflecting on the trying year, he described it as his most frustrating yet, pointing to both personal and unforeseen circumstances.
Spieth also shared some insights into his ongoing struggles with the injury affecting his ground impact, particularly in a year where he excelled in driving statistics. While he did not specify the exact timing of his surgery, he expressed openness to potentially seeking an exemption to participate in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in December. Beyond that, the golfer mentioned that his plans are currently open, except for caring for his two young children, a task that he humorously acknowledged becomes more challenging with one arm dedicated to recovery.
