New York Mets’ Starling Marte has returned to the field after an eight-week absence due to a bone bruise on his right knee. The right fielder was activated from the 15-day injured list on Sunday and was placed in the fifth spot in the batting order for the game against Miami. Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza stated that Marte will receive regular rest to ensure his health for the upcoming stretch of games.

Despite being plagued by injuries in the past two years, the 35-year-old Marte had a strong start with the Mets in 2022, hitting .292 and earning a spot on the All-Star team. Mendoza emphasized Marte’s significance to the team while highlighting the importance of managing his playing time to prevent further setbacks.

With Marte back in action, the Mets have various options in right field, including fourth outfielder Tyrone Taylor and recent acquisition Jesse Winker. Marte had been performing well before his injury, boasting a .278 batting average with seven home runs and 12 stolen bases in 12 attempts.

Marte expressed his frustration at the setback but remained positive about his return to the field. In a corresponding roster move, outfielder Ben Gamel was designated for assignment to make room for Marte’s return. The Mets are looking forward to Marte’s contributions as they push forward in the season.
