Extreme temperatures at a Colorado airshow led to approximately 100 individuals seeking emergency medical treatment and necessitated the hospitalization of 10 people on Saturday, officials reported. The Colorado Springs Fire Department shared that the majority of patients received care from onsite emergency responders at the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal commended the organizers and emergency personnel for their prompt actions, which helped avert serious injuries at the event held at the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, situated about 81 miles south of Denver.

The airshow, featuring performances by the renowned U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight exhibition team and showcasing a variety of modern and vintage aircraft, had sold out tickets for both Saturday and Sunday, according to the event’s website.

A message on the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow’s Instagram account reminded attendees to stay hydrated in the heat, highlighting the availability of a free water station near the medical facility.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, had issued a heat advisory cautioning of temperatures ranging between 93 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit for the area on Saturday afternoon. This advisory extended to El Paso County and Pueblo County for Sunday from noon to 7 p.m., continued the weather service’s notice.

Ahead of the airshow’s second day, the fire department advised attendees to equip themselves with water bottles, hats, sunscreen, and umbrellas to stay protected from the heat. Chief Randy Royal emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, being ready for high temperatures, and ensuring safety amidst the hot conditions anticipated for the following day.
