South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Kyle Verreynne each scored half-centuries on the second day of the second cricket test in Guyana, giving the Proteas a 239-run lead. After scoring 160 in their first innings, South Africa reached 223-5 at stumps, while the West Indies was all out for 144 in their first innings earlier in the day.
Markram made 50 runs, while Verreynne remained unbeaten on 51. Jason Holder (54 not out) and Shamar Joseph (25) had a 40-run partnership for the final wicket, bringing the West Indies within 16 runs of South Africa’s first-innings total.
A total of eight wickets fell on the second day at Providence Stadium, building on the 17 wickets that fell on the opening day of the match. Wiaan Mulder claimed four wickets for South Africa, while Jayden Seales took three wickets for the West Indies in the Proteas’ second innings, adding to his three wickets in the first innings.
The first test between the two teams in Trinidad ended in a rain-affected draw. The ongoing two-test series will be followed by three Twenty20 matches.
