In Washington, D.C., a jury has found former city employee Jason Lewis guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of 13-year-old Karon Blake. The incident, which occurred in January 2023, led to public outrage in the nation’s capital. Although Lewis was acquitted of second-degree murder, he was convicted of manslaughter and other charges following a trial at D.C. Superior Court.

Lewis, a employee of the Parks and Recreation Department, surrendered himself last year in connection with Blake’s death. The tragic event took place at around 4 a.m. near the middle school Blake attended. Video evidence presented during the trial showed Lewis leaving his residence and shooting at two individuals suspected of breaking into cars. When a car was hit, Blake ran towards Lewis, who then fired two shots that resulted in the teenager’s death.

During the trial, prosecutors showcased a video where Blake could be heard pleading, “I’m sorry” and explaining to Lewis, “I’m just a kid.” Lewis, through his attorney, did not provide immediate comment on the verdict.

Lewis testified in court, claiming he acted in self-defense because he believed another person was shooting at him, instilling fear for his safety. Lewis is set to be sentenced in October, with the manslaughter charge carrying a maximum penalty of 45 years in prison.
