Fast bowlers were dominant on the opening day of the second cricket test between South Africa and West Indies in Guyana. Shamar Joseph, in his international debut for the West Indies, impressed with five wickets for 33 runs, restricting South Africa to 160 all out after the visitors opted to bat first. In response, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder shone with a career-best 4-18, helping reduce West Indies to 97 for seven at the close of play, trailing by 63 runs.

Jason Holder was the top scorer for West Indies with an unbeaten 33, while Dan Piedt remained not out on 38 for South Africa. Piedt and Nandre Burger (23) formed a crucial 10th-wicket partnership of 63 runs. Fast bowlers claimed 15 of the 17 wickets that fell on the day, delivering 68 of the 82.2 overs bowled.

Following a rain-affected draw in the first test in Trinidad, the two-test series between South Africa and West Indies will be followed by three Twenty20 matches.
