Minjee Lee of Australia takes the lead in the Women’s Scottish Open after an opening round of 67 amidst rain delays

Two-time major champion Minjee Lee from Australia excelled in challenging weather conditions at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, taking the lead with a 5-under 67 before play was halted for the day in Irvine, Scotland. Lydia Ko, fresh off her Olympic golf medal win, made an impressive round of 69 despite facing severe weather conditions at Dundonald Links. A Lim Kim, a former U.S. Women’s Open champion, and American Megan Khang followed closely behind with a score of 68.

The opening round of the tournament was disrupted by bad weather and a waterlogged course, causing delays in play. Lily May Humphreys from England was at 4 under with six holes remaining when play was suspended due to rain, and there were multiple weather delays throughout the day. Lee, who had a disappointing Olympics outing in Paris, played a flawless round with strategic moves, securing birdies on the back nine par 5s.

Lee expressed her contentment with a bogey-free round, emphasizing her smart gameplay and ability to capitalize on birdie opportunities. Ko, on the other hand, faced more challenging conditions with chaotic weather, including strong winds and rain. Despite the adversity, Ko managed a 69 with only one birdie on the par 5s, acknowledging the difficulty of playing in such conditions.

Players like Charley Hull from England and Esther Henseleit from Germany were also in contention, with Hull briefly challenging for the lead before a setback on the 14th hole. The tournament serves as a crucial preparation for the upcoming Women’s British Open at St. Andrews next week. The diverse weather conditions and tough course at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open are providing players with valuable experience and test their skills before the next major tournament.
