India has declined an offer from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host the Twenty20 World Cup for women in October as a replacement for Bangladesh. The decision comes amid political unrest in Bangladesh, with over 300 casualties since July due to protests against a government job quota system and dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Hasina Wajid’s rule. Hasina was ultimately forced out of office, prompting her to flee to India, ending her 15-year tenure.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s secretary, Jay Shah, stated that they have firmly rejected the ICC’s proposal to host the World Cup. Shah cited concerns about India’s monsoon season and the upcoming hosting of the Women’s ODI World Cup next year as reasons for declining the offer. Other potential hosts being considered include the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.
In light of the situation in Bangladesh, the ICC has been closely monitoring developments alongside the local cricket board, prioritizing the safety and well-being of players. Countries such as England, India, and Australia have issued stern travel advisories following the installation of an interim government in Bangladesh.
