Sabally and Siegrist set to return from injuries as WNBA resumes post-Olympic break

Satou Sabally, who missed all 25 games of the season due to a shoulder injury and her participation in the Olympics for Germany, is cleared to make her season debut for the Dallas Wings. Along with Sabally, Maddy Siegrist, who had been out with a broken finger, and rookie Jaelyn Brown have also been medically cleared to return to the active roster following the month-long Olympic break. The Wings had to release Odyssey Sims and Monique Billings, who were on hardship contracts due to the team’s injury situation.

Sabally and Brown, the latter having played only one game this season due to a nasal fracture and illness, are expected to suit up for the Wings on Friday against Connecticut. Siegrist is set to return to the lineup on Tuesday when the team faces New York. Sabally, a 2023 All-Star, excelled in the four games she played in Paris, averaging 18.8 points and 5.8 rebounds. She sustained a shoulder injury in February during Germany’s Olympic qualification process.

Siegrist, who had surgery for a broken finger and missed the last 12 games, was averaging 14.6 points per game, a significant increase from her rookie season averages. The Wings, having had a challenging season with a record of 6-19 before the break, are striving to secure a playoff spot. They are currently 4 1/2 games behind Chicago for the final playoff position in the league.

Despite a recent victory over Indiana, the Wings released Sims and Billings to make room for the returning players. Sims, a seasoned pro who also endured a similar situation with the team last year before finishing the season with them, was averaging 17.2 points and 5.6 assists in her nine games this year. Billings contributed an average of 8.8 points and 6.6 rebounds in 24 games before being released from the roster.
