NASCAR announced on Wednesday that Austin Dillon’s recent win at Richmond Raceway would not count towards his eligibility for the Cup Series playoffs. Dillon will still be credited with his first victory of the season, but due to his actions on the track being deemed detrimental to stock car auto racing or NASCAR, his playoff eligibility has been revoked.
In his pursuit of a win after nearly two years, Dillon made aggressive moves on the final lap that ultimately resulted in NASCAR champions Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano crashing into the wall, clearing the way for Dillon to claim victory. As a consequence, Dillon and the Richard Childress Racing No. 3 team have been penalized with a deduction of 25 points each in the drivers’ and owners’ standings, causing Dillon to fall from 26th to 31st in the driver standings.
Furthermore, Dillon’s spotter, Brandon Benesch, has been handed a three-race suspension. Logano, who was involved in the incident, was fined $50,000 for an infraction on pit road involving smoking his tires while passing Dillon and his team.
As of now, it is uncertain whether Richard Childress Racing will challenge NASCAR’s decision regarding the penalty.
