Shea Langeliers made a significant impact in the game between the Oakland Athletics and the New York Mets by hitting a three-run homer off former teammate Paul Blackburn. Langeliers, who went 4 for 4 in the game, had two doubles and narrowly missed hitting for the cycle as he was only a triple shy. This marked Langeliers’ second consecutive four-hit game, following his impressive performance against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
The game started with Seth Brown driving in three runs with a double against Blackburn in the first inning. Langeliers later sealed a four-run inning for the Athletics with a 406-foot home run to left-center field. The Mets managed to score three runs in the fifth inning against Athletics’ starter Joe Boyle, including an RBI double by Jesse Winker and a two-run single by Pete Alonso.
Austin Adams, who joined the Athletics after being purchased from the Mets in March, came in to relieve Boyle in a tight situation and secured the win by striking out Jeff McNeil and retiring Jose Iglesias and Francisco Alvarez. Adams even mimicked the Mets’ “OMG” celebration after his crucial performance.
Despite Iglesias contributing with a run-scoring single and the Mets’ efforts to regain momentum, they have struggled lately, losing eight of their last 12 games. Boyle pitched well but ultimately allowed four runs during his time on the mound, while Blackburn, who was traded to the Mets in July, had a tough outing giving up seven runs (six earned) in four innings.
In terms of injuries, the Athletics had updates on players like SS Jacob Wilson and C Tyler Soderstrom, whereas the Mets dealt with injuries to DH J.D. Martinez and RHP Christian Scott. Martinez had to be substituted after being hit by a fastball, and Scott is hopeful to return in September after dealing with a right elbow injury.
The series between the Athletics and Mets will continue on Wednesday night, with Joey Estes scheduled to pitch for the Athletics against David Peterson for the Mets.
