A storm with heavy rainfall hit eastern Afghanistan, leading to the death of at least 35 individuals, as reported by a Taliban official. The incident resulted in numerous injuries across Nangarhar province, according to Sediqullah Quraishi, the provincial director of the information and culture department. Sadly, among the deceased were five members of a family who lost their lives when their house collapsed in Surkh Rod district. Additionally, four other family members sustained injuries.
Quraishi mentioned that women and children were among those who lost their lives or were injured. Severe damages to properties and crops in various parts of the province were also caused by the storm. This catastrophic weather event adds to the already devastating impact of the exceptionally heavy rains in Afghanistan, which had previously resulted in the death of over 300 individuals and the destruction of thousands of homes, predominantly in the northern province of Baghlan on May 10 and May 11.
Survivors of these tragic events are left without homes, land, or a means of livelihood, according to the World Food Program.
