Lucy McBath
Well, bless her heart, Lucy McBath is thinking about running for governor. Now, sugar, that’s big news for Georgia. She’s the first Democrat to throw her name in the ring for 2026. Right now, she’s dipping her toes in the waterwith one of them exploratory committees. But we all know what that means. She’s gearing up for a full campaign.
Governor Brian Kemp is on his way out. He can’t run again. So, the Republicans are already lining up. Attorney General Chris Carr is in. Folks expect Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to jump in soon.
Now, over on the Democratic side, things are wide open. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms might run. So could state Senator Jason Esteves and former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. And let’s not forget about Stacey Abrams. She’s been quiet, but honey, she ain’t ruled it out.
McBath got into Congress back in 2018. She beat Republican Karen Handel and flipped a district that Newt Gingrich once held. Then came redistricting drama. Republicans shuffled the maps, and she had to fight to keep her seat. She won a nasty primary against another Democrat. Then, another redistricting forced her to switch districts again. But honey, she won. And now, she’s looking at something bigger.
McBath knows Georgia Democrats. She understands Black women voters, and that’s a big deal in the primary. But she’s also looking at the suburbs. Earlier this year, she supported Trump’s immigration bill. That upset some Democrats, but it could help her win moderates.
McBath’s political career began with tragedy. Her son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed in 2012. That moment changed her life. She became a fierce advocate for gun control. McBath pushed for stricter background checks. She fought to keep guns away from domestic abusers. In 2024, she led a group of gun violence survivors at the Democratic National Convention.
McBath says she understands everyday struggles. She’s a mother. And a breast cancer survivor. She says she knows what it’s like to feel left out. Right now, she’s talking to voters. She wants to hear what Georgians need.
This race is just getting started. McBath has name recognition. She’s got big money backing from Michael Bloomberg. And she’s got a personal story that resonates. Georgia better get ready, because sugar, this race is about to heat up.
