Emmanuel Macron believes granting French citizenship to Telegram CEO Durov was beneficial

French President, Emmanuel Macron, defended his decision to grant fast-track citizenship to Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram messaging app, who is facing preliminary charges in France for alleged criminal activities on his platform. Macron clarified that he was unaware of Durov’s arrival in France and had no plans to meet him. Durov was released on 5 million euro bail but is prohibited from leaving France and must check in with the police twice a week as the investigation continues.

Durov’s lawyer argued that it is unreasonable to hold the head of a social network accountable for criminal activity that does not involve him directly or indirectly. The case has sparked a debate on how to regulate illegal activities online and has brought attention to Durov’s unconventional background and possession of multiple passports.

During a news conference in Serbia, Macron emphasized France’s support for freedom of expression and entrepreneurial liberty. He justified granting Durov French nationality by likening it to similar cases involving prominent individuals who contribute to the country’s prosperity and culture.

Macron was prompted to respond after reports emerged that Durov had claimed he was scheduled to meet with the French President. Macron refuted these claims, stating that he was not informed of Durov’s presence in France and did not extend any invitations to him. Macron emphasized that Durov’s arrest was an independent decision made by the French justice system.
