David McCullough’s posthumous essay anthology, “History Matters,” set to be released this autumn.

A posthumous collection of essays by the esteemed historian David McCullough is set to be published this fall, featuring several pieces that have never been seen by the public before. Titled “History Matters,” this compilation is slated for release on September 16, as announced by Simon & Schuster. The book has been co-edited by McCullough’s daughter, Dorie McCullough Lawson, alongside long-time researcher Michael Hill. Additionally, historian Jon Meacham has provided a foreword for the collection.

In a statement, Lawson expressed her gratitude for working with her father’s writings since his passing. She quoted her mother, Rosalee, who believed his work would endure over time, and noted how true that insight has proven to be. Lawson emphasized that the central themes of the collection reflect McCullough’s optimism, integrity, thorough analysis, independence, creativity, dedication, and patriotism.

David McCullough, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 89, was a highly respected figure in the field of history and received the Pulitzer Prize twice. His notable works include biographies of former Presidents Harry Truman and John Adams, the distinguished book “1776,” as well as the acclaimed narrative of the Brooklyn Bridge, titled “The Great Bridge.”

Simon & Schuster highlighted that throughout his illustrious career, McCullough consistently illustrated the importance of understanding history. The upcoming collection of essays comes at a time when the United States is contemplating its identity following a divisive election. These essays delve into fundamental American virtues that resonate across various demographics, transcending region, political affiliations, and diverse backgrounds. Core values such as optimism, perseverance, and character are addressed. Furthermore, the book includes McCullough’s insights on writing, along with discussions of his early influences and inspirations, providing a richer understanding of his historical perspective.
