Chargers intend to add Ezekiel Elliott to their practice squad following his departure from the Cowboys.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Chargers are in the process of bringing in running back Ezekiel Elliott to their practice squad, pending a required physical examination, according to sources familiar with the situation. These individuals requested to remain anonymous as the details of the signing have not yet been finalized.

The Chargers, who finished the season with an 11-6 record, have secured the fifth seed in the AFC. They are set to begin their playoff campaign against Houston this coming Saturday in a wild-card round matchup.

Elliott, formerly with the Dallas Cowboys, was released on December 31, allowing him the opportunity to join a playoff-contending team in need of an experienced running back. This situation echoes last year’s occurrence when Dalvin Cook was let go by the New York Jets and subsequently joined Baltimore for their divisional-round win against Houston.

Throughout the current season, Elliott has recorded his lowest statistics to date, playing in 15 games, where he managed only 74 carries for a total of 226 yards, averaging 3.1 yards per carry. A two-time NFL rushing champion, he has amassed an impressive career total of 9,130 rushing yards and 74 rushing touchdowns over his nine seasons in the league.

J.K. Dobbins is currently the starting running back for the Chargers, while Gus Edwards has been sidelined for the last two games of the regular season due to an ankle injury.
