After 36 years of anticipation, the long-awaited sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has burst onto the big screen with a record-breaking $110 million in its opening weekend. This makes it the third-highest opening weekend of the year, trailing behind only “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Michael Keaton reprises his role as the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice, while Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder also return as Delia and Lydia Deetz. Newcomer Jenna Ortega joins the cast as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, alongside Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.
This sequel now stands as the second highest-grossing September movie in history, following behind 2017’s “It” which opened with an impressive $123 million. In 2019, “It Chapter 2” debuted with $91 million.
The original “Beetlejuice” film had a modest $8 million opening in 1988, but eventually became a cult favorite, grossing $77 million domestically. The success of this sequel marks a triumphant start to the fall movie season, following a sluggish Labor Day weekend and a relatively slow August in theaters.
