LONDON – On Friday, a collective declaration was issued by the leaders of all five political parties in Greenland’s parliament, strongly opposing U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring the Arctic territory.

Following an election earlier this week, these parties, which currently hold seats in Greenland’s parliament, came together to address the issue. Their statement firmly stated their disapproval of any notions of annexation or any attempts to exert control over Greenland.

“We, the leaders of all parties, unequivocally reject the recurring comments regarding Greenland’s annexation and control,” the statement articulated. “This stance is unacceptable behavior towards our partners and allies within a defense alliance,” they emphasized.

Greenland functions as a self-reliant entity under Denmark, a nation aligned with the United States through NATO. The statement emerged as a response to Trump’s continued interest in Greenland, a region strategically significant due to key air and sea pathways through the Arctic.

In a recent press encounter with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump was queried about his ambitions to take over Greenland. In response, he confidently remarked, “Well, I think it’ll happen.”

Trump elaborated, “We’ve been in discussions with Denmark and Greenland. This is something we have to pursue. It is vital for national security.” He reminded the audience about existing U.S. military bases in Greenland, suggesting the possibility of increased military presence.

Commenting on the matter, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute B. Egede was particularly vocal in dismissing Trump’s ambitions. Utilizing social media, he expressed his stance clearly, stating, “Our nation will never become part of the USA, and we, as Greenlanders, will remain our own people,” declaring the unity of the country.
