Arizona expresses regret over fans’ inappropriate chant during basketball defeat against BYU

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Arizona has issued an apology after reports surfaced that some fans engaged in an offensive chant following the basketball team’s close defeat to BYU on Saturday night, with a final score of 96-95.

Video footage circulating online captured fans shouting a vulgar phrase aimed at Mormons as both teams exited the court. BYU, known as the flagship university for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was the target of this inappropriate behavior.

Athletic Director Desireé Reed-Francois released a statement acknowledging the incident, stating, “Following tonight’s men’s basketball game, we learned that an unacceptable chant occurred. On behalf of the University of Arizona Athletic Department, we extend our apologies to BYU, their student-athletes, coaches, and supporters. This chant does not represent who we are, and such conduct should not have taken place.”

In the matchup, Richie Saunders notably led BYU with 23 points, including two crucial free throws in the final moments of the game, securing the victory for the Cougars against the 19th-ranked Arizona team. This triumph marks BYU’s fourth consecutive win, including their second straight victory against a ranked opponent after previously defeating No. 23 Kansas with a decisive score of 91-57.

As the season progresses, many are keenly following the developments within college basketball, including poll updates and rankings. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates throughout the season.
