HATTIESBURG, Miss.
— In a thrilling matchup on Saturday night, Louisiana-Lafayette edged past Southern Miss with a final score of 62-60, thanks in part to an important performance from Mostapha El Moutaouakkil, who contributed 10 points to the team’s efforts.
In the dying seconds of the game, Christian Watson managed to score a jumper, bringing Southern Miss within one point at 61-60. However, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Christian Wright was able to secure their lead by converting just one of his two free throw attempts shortly after.
El Moutaouakkil ended the game shooting 4 for 12 from the field and 2 for 5 from the foul line for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who now hold a record of 11 wins and 18 losses, with an even 8-8 standing in the Sun Belt Conference. Kentrell Garnett supported with nine points while Kyran Ratliff chipped in with eight points for the Cajuns.
On the other side, Neftali Alvarez was the standout for the Golden Eagles, scoring 14 points and earning two steals. Denijay Harris had a significant impact as well, posting 12 points, grabbing 17 rebounds, and blocking two shots. Christian Watson also contributed with 11 points. Unfortunately for Southern Miss, this result marks their sixth consecutive loss.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to return to action on Wednesday. Louisiana-Lafayette will host Arkansas State, while Southern Miss is scheduled to take on South Alabama at home.
