BOSTON — Donald Hand Jr. led the charge with 20 points as Boston College delivered another impressive defensive display, ultimately defeating Georgia Tech 69-54 on Saturday. The Eagles showcased their defensive prowess, effectively stretching the lead in the closing moments of the game.
After ending a four-game losing streak with a commanding 54-36 victory over Virginia Tech earlier in the week, which marked the lowest scoring output by an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent since Boston College joined in the 2005-06 season, the team’s defensive focus continued against the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech struggled offensively, shooting only 32.1% from the field and committing 13 turnovers throughout the contest.
It was Senior Day for Boston College, and senior Chad Venning, alongside sophomore Elijah Strong, emerged as key defenders. Venning contributed significantly with 13 points and seven rebounds, while also making an impact defensively by blocking four shots. Strong supported the offense with nine points and two rebounds.
The Eagles entered halftime with a slight edge, leading 32-27. The start of the second half saw Venning score consecutively with three layups, along with two free throws that ignited a 10-0 run, extending their advantage to 15 points with 14 minutes remaining. Although Georgia Tech made a push, narrowing the gap with a 3-pointer from Naithan George with 4:28 left in the game to bring the score to 56-50, Boston College responded well. Dion Brown made two crucial baskets, and Hand was successful at the free-throw line after being fouled on a long-range attempt, converting two out of three attempts.
For Georgia Tech (13-14, 7-9), Baye Ndongo was the standout player with 17 points, 15 rebounds, and four assists, while teammate Lance Terry contributed 15 points.
As Boston College continues its push to qualify for the ACC tournament, they find themselves one and a half games away from securing one of the 14 spots available. The Eagles have four games remaining in the regular season, with their next match taking them to Stanford on Wednesday, followed by a clash against California on Saturday. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech will face Pittsburgh on Tuesday in their subsequent matchup.
