DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In a remarkable performance at the Dubai Championships on Saturday, 17-year-old Russian talent Mirra Andreeva clinched the title by defeating Clara Tauson with a score of 7-6 (1), 6-1. This victory marks a significant milestone for Andreeva as it is the most prestigious championship she has achieved in her young career.
Following this win, Andreeva is set to make her debut in the top 10 of the WTA rankings next week, becoming the first player aged 17 to accomplish this feat since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007. This accomplishment underscores her remarkable talent and potential in the world of tennis.
Andreeva’s triumph at the Dubai Championships caps off an impressive week for her. Earlier in the tournament, she secured victories against prominent players, including 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek—who is a five-time major titleholder—and Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion. With these wins, she became the youngest player to overcome three major champions in a single event since Maria Sharapova did so at the 2004 WTA Finals. Additionally, she has now made history as the youngest competitor to reach the final of a WTA 1000 event.
Prior to this remarkable achievement, Andreeva’s only other title was obtained at the Iasi Open in Romania last year, showcasing her rapid ascent in the sport at such a tender age. As she continues to make waves on the court, the tennis world eagerly watches her promising career unfold.
