DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva has made history by becoming the youngest athlete to advance to the final of a WTA 1,000 tournament. On Friday, she triumphed over sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the Dubai Championships.
At just 17 years old, Andreeva found herself trailing 3-1 in the decisive third set. However, she made a remarkable comeback, clinching five consecutive games to secure her place in the final. This marks her second appearance in a tour-level final, following her victory at the Iasi Open in Romania last July.
Andreeva’s opponent in the upcoming final will be determined from the match between Denmark’s Clara Tauson, who eliminated the top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, and the Czech player Karolina Muchova.
With her impressive wins in Dubai over notable players like Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Marketa Vondrousova, Andreeva has set another record. She has become the youngest player to defeat three Grand Slam champions within a single tournament since Maria Sharapova achieved this milestone back in 2004 during the WTA Finals.
