NEW YORK — The world-renowned chess player Magnus Carlsen is converting a controversial pair of jeans into funds for a good cause.
This Norwegian grandmaster recently revealed his plan to auction off the stylish denim from the luxury Italian brand, which ignited a dress code controversy during December’s World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.
After accepting a $200 penalty rather than changing into more formal trousers, Carlsen opted to withdraw from the tournament, prompting an outcry among fans and players alike. Although the organizing body eventually relaxed the dress code, Carlsen has decided to sell his notorious jeans.
Chess enthusiasts and followers of the #JeansGate saga now have the chance to bid on Carlsen’s size 32 regular fit Corneliani jeans. Scheduled to conclude on March 1, the auction is currently listing the pants as pre-owned but in “good” condition on eBay, with the highest bid reaching $8,200 as of February 21.
All proceeds from this auction will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, a prominent youth mentoring organization that operates through local chapters in over 5,000 communities across the country. As stated by BBBSA President and CEO Artis Stevens, funds raised will be utilized to amplify mentorship programs through chess clinics and community events, empowering youth with essential skills and confidence to tackle life’s obstacles.
Stevens highlighted that chess has consistently been a popular pastime for program participants, promoting critical thinking and fostering lasting relationships.
“Magnus Carlsen has mesmerized audiences worldwide with his exceptional talent in chess, and now, this unique piece of chess history will serve to inspire and uplift young individuals through meaningful mentorship,” Stevens remarked.
