Nick Pivetta has agreed to a four-year deal worth $55 million with the San Diego Padres that comes with a conditional $5 million team option for 2029. This option can be activated if the right-handed pitcher suffers from a designated injury.
The Padres have the right to exercise this option if Pivetta experiences a specific injury or undergoes surgery related to the injury, requiring him to be placed on the injured list for over 130 consecutive days within any season or across a one-year time frame. This condition applies to injuries, surgeries, and IL days occurring from July 1, 2026, to the completion of the 2028 season.
Last season, Pivetta faced some challenges on the field, spending time on the injured list from April 6 to May 8 due to a right elbow flexor strain. Throughout the 2022 season, he recorded a record of 6-12 alongside a 4.14 ERA over 26 starts and one relief appearance while playing for the Boston Red Sox. He opted to reject a qualifying offer from the Red Sox that was valued at $21.05 million.
In conjunction with his new contract, Pivetta will receive a $3 million signing bonus. His annual salaries are structured as follows: $1 million for the current year, $19 million in 2026, $14 million in 2027, and $18 million in 2028. This agreement was officially announced on Monday.
As he recently turned 32, Pivetta’s career stats reflect a 56-71 record with a 4.76 ERA across eight seasons in the major leagues, having previously played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2017 to 2020 before being traded to the Red Sox in August 2020.
Furthermore, as a perk, Pivetta is entitled to a hotel suite during road trips with the team.
