QR-code labels unexpectedly found on 1,000 tombstones in Munich, prompting police inquiry.

MUNICH — Authorities in Munich are currently looking into a peculiar situation involving over 1,000 stickers that have been affixed to gravestones and wooden crosses across three local cemeteries, with no clear source or motive identified.

The stickers measure approximately 5×3.5 centimeters (1.95×1.2 inches) and feature a QR code. Scanning the code reveals the name of the deceased individual and the corresponding grave location within the cemetery, but no additional information is provided.

Christian Drexler, a spokesperson for the police, reported on Wednesday that there has not yet been a discernible pattern to the placement of these stickers. “They have been attached to gravestones that date back several decades as well as to newer graves that currently only have wooden markers,” said Drexler.

Drexler also urged anyone who might have observed the application of these stickers to contact the management of the respective cemetery directly. The stickers have been found recently at the Waldfriedhof, Sendlinger Friedhof, and Friedhof Solln cemeteries.

In addition to identifying the individuals responsible for the stickers, police are also addressing issues of property damage. The gravestones sustained some damage and discoloration when attempts were made to remove the stickers, prompting further investigation into the matter.
