BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Emerging tennis prodigy João Fonseca concluded an “unbelievable week” by securing his first tour-level championship with a decisive straight sets win against Francisco Cerúndolo in the final of the Argentina Open on Sunday.

The 18-year-old Brazilian, who previously triumphed at the Next Gen ATP Finals last December, claimed victory over his Argentine counterpart with scores of 6-4, 7-6 (1), playing on clay courts.

The atmosphere at the ATP 250 event was electrifying, with local supporters in Buenos Aires creating a festive backdrop reminiscent of a heated soccer face-off between Argentina and Brazil.

“This was just an unbelievable week for me,” expressed Fonseca, who made headlines by defeating ninth-ranked Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Australian Open in January. He remains optimistic about his ambitions, stating, “Of course I want to be No. 1, of course I want to win Slams.”

According to the elite men’s tennis circuit, Fonseca has made history as the first male player born in 2006 or later to capture an ATP title, becoming the 10th youngest champion in the history of the ATP Tour and the youngest South American player to achieve a title since the tour’s inception in 1990.

Following his victory, Fonseca is set to move up to No. 68 in the ATP rankings on Monday.
