OAKLAND, Calif. — This weekend, Stephen and Ayesha Curry are all set for a whirlwind of celebrations. Their agenda is packed with festivities, including brunches and dinners, along with glamour-filled red carpet events and plenty of photos. However, before the excitement reaches its peak with the All-Star Game scheduled for Sunday night, the Currys have their hands full with noteworthy acts of service.

On Friday, they kicked off their weekend with a large community service initiative at an elementary school in Oakland, where their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation led a playground renovation and a day filled with activities for around 300 volunteers. The duo has dedicated themselves to supporting schools and children in need, allowing their passions for basketball, fashion, food, and philanthropy to shine through during this festive weekend.

“We just love Oakland,” Ayesha Curry expressed in an interview alongside her husband. “This community means so much to us because it’s where we grew up, started our life together, and welcomed our first child. Hence, we have always aimed to stay connected to this community, regardless of where our careers may take us.”

Interestingly, although the Golden State Warriors have shifted their home games to San Francisco, the Currys are unwavering in their commitment to Oakland. Stephen Curry emphasized that they would not forget the community that played a big part in shaping them.

“We have a wonderful team that shares our commitment to Oakland, and we leverage that to create meaningful impacts,” he said, revealing that this renovation marks the 17th playspace project they have undertaken. He reminisced about the thrill of unveiling these spaces and the joy it brings to the kids and educators involved, noting how that energy positively impacts their mission.

While Stephen Curry was born in Ohio and Ayesha in Toronto, both consider the Bay Area their true home, especially since he has spent his entire basketball career with the Warriors. “Even once I’m done playing, we plan to remain here. This area is definitely home for us,” he remarked.

The Currys established their foundation about five years ago in response to the pressing needs exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both are highly accomplished in their fields—Stephen is regarded as arguably the greatest shooter in NBA history, while Ayesha is a successful chef and restaurateur. Nevertheless, their commitment to philanthropy fills their lives with purpose beyond their professional achievements.

The foundation endeavors to tackle essential aspects such as nutrition, physical activity, and academic support, with an increased focus on literacy in recent months. “Improving literacy allows kids to graduate and pursue better opportunities,” Ayesha explained.

The trio of days ahead promises to be action-packed. The Warriors recently wrapped up back-to-back road games before returning home early on Friday morning. Despite the fatigue, Stephen Curry views the weekend as a treasure trove of opportunities.

With this year’s event marking his 11th selection as an All-Star, just months after helping the U.S. secure Olympic gold in Paris, Stephen remains energized by the responsibilities of being a host. “Reflecting on our experiences in the Bay is important. It’s a bit of a responsibility to be a de facto host, but it’s a chance to shine a light on our tremendous journey here,” he said.

As the weekend unfolds, it’s not just the All-Star Game that will be on display for millions across the globe, but also the lasting benefits their community initiatives will bring to local children for years to come. By Sunday, when the whirlwind nears its conclusion, Stephen Curry believes there will be much to celebrate and reflect upon.
