STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Katie Schumacher-Cawley, the head coach of the Penn State women’s volleyball team, has secured a contract extension that will keep her with the program through the 2030 season. This announcement was made by the university shortly after she guided the Nittany Lions to a national championship victory and just days after finishing her cancer treatment.
Schumacher-Cawley made history as the first woman to coach a national championship-winning team in women’s volleyball, with her squad triumphantly defeating both Nebraska and Louisville during the semifinals. Under her leadership, the Nittany Lions achieved a remarkable record of 35 wins against just 2 losses.
“I could not be more excited and honored to represent Penn State,” stated Schumacher-Cawley. “Being part of this exceptional University, our prestigious volleyball program, and the dedicated Penn State community means so much to me. The success we enjoy today is built upon the legacy established by those who came before us, and it is my duty to continue upholding the tradition, pride, and unwavering pursuit of greatness that our program is known for.”
At 44 years old, Schumacher-Cawley publicly shared her breast cancer diagnosis in October. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, she remained committed to her team, not missing any practices or matches throughout her treatment period. She recently announced the completion of her treatments, marking a significant personal milestone.
