SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria — American skier Breezy Johnson returned from the world championships with unexpected accolades, including two gold medals and a unique headband dedicated to Austria. Johnson, who has a passion for knitting, crafted a headband in the red and white colors of the host country’s flag before her downhill victory. She managed to complete it in time to wear it during the podium ceremony for the team combined event, where she shared the win with fellow skier Mikaela Shiffrin.
“I’m somewhat superstitious, so I feel the need to have a new headband or hat at the finish of every race,” Johnson explained. “I whipped this out in just two days and thought, ‘Austrian colors — a fun touch for Saalbach.’”
Knitting serves as a relaxing outlet for Johnson. “I enjoy creating things as it’s both fun and it keeps my hands busy,” she shared. “I also like to listen to audiobooks while I knit, so I get to enjoy a story while being productive. I can be a bit fidgety, so I need something to occupy my hands.”
Johnson undoubtedly has impressive skills on the slopes as well. Her younger teammate, Lauren Macuga, also made her mark, clinching a bronze medal in the super-G during her world championship debut. She was leading in the downhill section of the combined event but ultimately finished fourth alongside her teammate Paula Moltzan.
After her downhill performance, Macuga expressed her joy with an energetic dance, lifting her arms and moving her body in a loose manner. This playful celebration was not meant to mimic Lucas Pinheiro Braathen’s “snow samba,” which he performed after making history for Brazil with a World Cup podium finish. Instead, Macuga described her dance as a funny fusion of a tribute to SpongeBob SquarePants and the wacky inflatable figures often seen at car dealerships.
“It’s not salsa, but definitely something amusing,” she stated.
