SAN DIEGO — Actress and producer Issa Rae has officially become a part of the ownership team for the newly established Major League Soccer club, San Diego FC.
The team is set to begin its debut season on February 23, taking on the reigning MLS champions, LA Galaxy.
Among the primary ownership group are billionaire Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe, marking a significant milestone as they are the first Native American tribe to hold a stake in a professional soccer franchise.
Rae’s involvement was publicly disclosed on Tuesday and places her among notable partners, including San Diego Padres’ third baseman Manny Machado and former Manchester United and Spanish national team star Juan Mata.
In a statement, Rae expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Soccer is a universal language that has the power to bring people together, and I look forward to contributing to San Diego FC’s journey as we make history in MLS.”
Rae’s entry into the ownership circle is in collaboration with Pave Investments, a private firm based in Africa that previously spearheaded investments in NBA Africa. The team also includes Pave Chairman Tunde Folawiyo and Founding Director Kwamena Afful.
Issa Rae gained fame through her HBO series “Insecure,” which she not only starred in but also co-created and co-wrote. She has appeared in several films, including “Barbie” and “The Hate U Give.”
