Alessandro Nesta has made a surprising return to Monza as the head coach of the struggling Serie A team, just a little over a month after his dismissal.
The former Italy and AC Milan defender was let go on December 23 due to the team’s poor performance, which had seen them secure only one victory in 17 league outings.
Following his departure, Salvatore Bocchetti took over the coaching responsibilities, signing a contract that extends until the end of the 2026-27 season. However, the club announced on Monday that Nesta would be stepping back into the coaching role.
Nesta, who was part of the Italian national team that lifted the 2006 World Cup trophy, has had a distinguished career both on and off the pitch. Alongside his time with AC Milan, he also had a notable career at Lazio. His coaching credentials include leading Miami FC, as well as having spells with Perugia, Frosinone, and Reggiana.
As it stands, Monza is in dire straits, accumulating only 13 points from 24 matches and currently sitting eight points adrift from safety in the league.
The club’s management will be hoping that Nesta’s return can instigate a turnaround in fortunes as they battle to avoid relegation.
