Yrjö Kukkapuro, a celebrated Finnish designer renowned for his postmodern chair designs, passed away at the age of 91. His death, which occurred at his residence near Helsinki, was confirmed by his daughter, Isa Kukkapuro-Enbom. She communicated the news via email, along with a statement from Studio Kukkapuro, where she acts as curator. However, details regarding the cause of his death have not been disclosed.

Recognized for his impactful contributions to furniture design, Kukkapuro’s creations can be found in various public and private spaces throughout Finland, including metro stations, banks, schools, and libraries. The studio highlighted his remarkable ability to connect with everyday life, noting that “almost every Finn has sat on a chair he designed.” Even in his last days, Kukkapuro remained passionate about his work, actively considering ideas for a new chair design, which his assistant did not have time to sketch out.

Throughout his extensive career spanning over 70 years, Kukkapuro’s chairs were celebrated for their comfort, functionality, and ergonomic design. His notable works include the Ateljee, Karuselli chair, Long Chair, and perhaps his most recognized piece, the Experiment chair. The Experiment, which debuted in 1982, showcased an avant-garde style but evolved into a commercial success, marking a significant moment in the postmodern furniture movement. Characterized by its vibrant, wavy armrests, upholstered back and seat, and uniquely angled seating, the chair combined artistry with functionality.

Although production of the Experiment chair was halted in the 1990s, European furniture design company Hem approached Kukkapuro’s family in 2021 to revitalize the piece with slight modifications. Petrus Palmér, the founder and CEO of Hem, expressed condolences upon hearing of Kukkapuro’s passing, acknowledging him as a pioneer in furniture design. He stated, “Yrjö’s passing saddens us, and our thoughts are with his family. He was a furniture design trailblazer, and showed us that a non-conformist approach is the only way to achieve a lasting legacy.” The Experiment chair was listed on Hem’s website for up to 2,399 euros ($2,479) and described as “timeless, bold, and as compelling today as the day it was created.”

The description further noted Kukkapuro’s intention to blend art with functionalism in the Experiment chair, catering to both aesthetic desires and practical needs. Kukkapuro’s family residence, which he designed with a wave-shaped roof and expansive glass windows, reflects his creative vision. Built in the late 1960s for him and his late wife, artist Irmeli Kukkapuro, who passed away in 2022, this architectural marvel is set to transition into a museum in the upcoming year.
