WACO, Texas — In a decisive matchup on Saturday, Norchad Omier achieved his 12th double-double of the current season and marked the 80th of his career, as Baylor triumphed over UCF with a score of 91-76, completing a sweep in their season series within the Big 12 Conference.
The senior player from Bluefields, Nicaragua, entered the contest sharing the ninth spot all-time in double-doubles with basketball legends Oscar Robertson and Michael Brooks. After leading his team with 18 points and securing 12 rebounds, he has now moved up to an eighth-place tie with Malik Rose.
UCF briefly gained the lead with a three-pointer from Moustapha Thiam at the 6:09 mark in the first half, bringing the score to 25-21. However, Omier responded with two successful free throws, followed by a basket from Jeremy Roach and another three-pointer from Robert Wright III, which allowed the Bears to take the lead permanently. Baylor dominated the remainder of the half, outpacing UCF 17-11, and heading into halftime with a 45-36 advantage.
VJ Edgecombe, who was named Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year, made a notable return to the Baylor roster, contributing 17 points, five assists, and two steals. His absence had previously led to the Bears’ loss against No. 13 Texas Tech earlier in the week with a score of 73-59. In addition to Edgecombe’s performance, Langston Love added 16 points and six rebounds, while teammates Jayden Nunn and Jalen Celestine chipped in with 12 points each, showcasing the bench’s robust contribution of 40 points overall for Baylor, who now stands at 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
For UCF, Keyshawn Hall led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds, although the Knights faced their fourth consecutive defeat and have won only one of their last seven games. Thiam posted an impressive three-point shooting performance, making 3 of 4 attempts and scoring 18 points, while Darius Johnson and Jordan Ivy-Curry added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Baylor is set to face No. 6 Houston on Monday, while UCF will welcome No. 8 Iowa State to their home court on Tuesday.
