SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria — Italian skiing sensation Sofia Goggia narrowly escaped a dangerous situation during an awkward jump landing in the final downhill training session at the Alpine skiing world championships on Friday.
In a noteworthy turn of events, American skier Lindsey Vonn finished in 21st place during the training after experiencing difficulties with a gate in the previous day’s super-G event.
As Goggia neared the end of her run, she found herself soaring high above the ground, her arms flailing as she awkwardly touched down with her body folding and landing on her skis. Though she fell onto her side, she managed to slide down the mountain before standing up and continuing her descent towards the finish area. Fortunately, the Italian team reported that Goggia had sustained no injuries.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Venier from Austria, who clinched the gold medal in super-G on Thursday, also concluded her run without any visible complications.
Leading the training session was Czech athlete Ester Ledecka, who clocked a time that placed her 0.22 seconds ahead of Austrian Mirjam Puchner and 0.43 seconds faster than Emma Aicher from Germany.
Midway through the session, Puchner showcased her speed by registering an impressive top velocity of 138.65 kph (86 mph).
The highly anticipated women’s downhill race is set to take place on Saturday.
