MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim has made the decision to let forward Marcus Rashford leave the club, stating he could not persuade him to adopt his coaching philosophy.
“I couldn’t get Marcus to understand the style of play that I envision or to embrace the training methods I believe in,” Amorim explained in comments released late Thursday.
The 27-year-old Rashford has moved to Aston Villa on loan just before the closure of the winter transfer window in Europe. He has not featured for United since mid-December and could potentially make his first appearance for Villa in their upcoming FA Cup clash against Tottenham on Sunday.
“Sometimes, a player may thrive under one coach but may not flourish under another,” Amorim noted. “I sincerely wish Rashford the best and hope he and Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, can establish a strong connection, as he is a tremendous talent.”
When asked if Rashford expressed disagreement with Amorim’s football philosophy, the manager responded, “You know, as well as I do, that’s not necessarily how these things unfold.”
“It’s an instinctual understanding between a coach and a player, which can vary from one situation to another. It’s a common occurrence with many coaches. What matters is that I made this choice,” he added.
Amorim dismissed speculation regarding a possible return for Rashford at the conclusion of the season, emphasizing that Rashford’s agreement with Villa includes an option for a permanent transfer reported at around 40 million pounds ($50 million).
“With our focus being on the present, we are all striving to keep our positions until the summer,” Amorim said. “My attention is solely dedicated to our team and our upcoming matches. Fortunately, Marcus is now in Birmingham working with Unai, so any questions regarding him can be directed elsewhere. Our main concern is our current squad.”
