LOS ANGELES — On Thursday evening, Steve Kerr and JJ Redick provided a memorable experience for the basketball community when the Golden State Warriors faced off against the Los Angeles Lakers in downtown Los Angeles.
Players and staff from Palisades Charter High School were invited to the game, as they sought a moment of reprieve following the wildfire that severely impacted their institution and neighborhood last month. The Warriors secured a 120-112 victory over the Lakers, making the night even more special for the guests.
For both Kerr and Redick, the effects of the wildfire hit close to home. Kerr’s childhood residence in Pacific Palisades was lost to the flames, and his 90-year-old mother, Ann, had to evacuate. Similarly, Redick and his family were among those who lost their home in the same disaster. Lakers owner Jeanie Buss was also present to support the Palisades community.
“It’s been a pleasure to team up with the Lakers to create a memorable evening for the Pali team and coaches,” Kerr shared. “Many of them have faced significant losses, and JJ and I completely understand their situation. Our goal is to give them an enjoyable night, a much-needed break from their recent hardships.”
In a show of support, Kerr and the Warriors gifted the team sports gear and shoes, with Kerr humorously noting that he might just sway the students’ loyalty away from the Lakers. Ann Kerr was also in attendance to cheer on her son’s team.
Redick proudly donned a Palisades Charter High sweatshirt during his pregame press conference, expressing his intention to visit with the Dolphins after the game.
“It’s generous of Steve to do this, and I’m here to do anything to support the community,” Redick remarked.
While Palisades High is temporarily closed as officials look for a new venue, students have transitioned to online learning reminiscent of the COVID-19 era.
Both coaches aimed to foster a positive and supportive atmosphere, hoping to offer some respite from the challenges the players had experienced in recent weeks.
The athletes and coaches were located in the lower bowl of the Lakers’ arena, where they witnessed an electrifying matchup between LeBron James and Stephen Curry. James shone with season-high stats of 42 points, 17 rebounds, and eight assists, while Curry contributed significantly with 37 points and six three-pointers.
