In Arlington, Texas, it has been announced that two-time Gold Glove recipient Nick Ahmed and outfielder Sam Haggerty will join the Texas Rangers for major league spring training after finalizing minor league contracts.
Ahmed, who will celebrate his 35th birthday on March 15, played various roles at shortstop last season with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres. Before that, he had a long tenure with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2014 to 2023, where he set a franchise record with 789 starts at shortstop. Ahmed earned Gold Glove accolades in both 2018 and 2019. During the last season, he posted a batting average of .229, hitting two home runs and driving in 17 runs over 71 games. Over his career, Ahmed has accumulated a .234 batting average with 72 home runs and 339 RBIs across 959 games played.
Haggerty has seen action in 191 games over the past five seasons for the Seattle Mariners following his big league debut with the New York Mets in 2019, where he appeared in 11 games. Now 30 years old, Haggerty has a career batting average of .232, with nine home runs and 40 RBIs over 202 games. Unfortunately, he struggled last season, going 1 for 15 before suffering a torn right Achilles tendon in May, ending his season prematurely.
With the recent signings of Ahmed and Haggerty, the Rangers have increased their roster to 27 non-roster invitees in preparation for spring training. The team’s initial full-squad workout is scheduled to take place in Arizona on February 17.
