NASCAR has announced a new rule aimed at enhancing competition by introducing a point system for the driver and team achieving the fastest single lap during each race. This initiative, named the “Xfinity Fastest Lap,” comes as part of a renewed agreement with Xfinity, which will continue its sponsorship in NASCAR’s secondary series through 2025.
Under this new arrangement, every race across NASCAR’s three national series will now reward a point for the fastest lap, further solidifying Xfinity’s commitment as the entitlement sponsor of the Xfinity series, while also extending its premium partnership with the Cup Series for several more years.
It’s worth noting that while IndyCar has implemented a similar fast-lap rule, Formula 1 recently did away with its version of the rule just before the current season started.
Comcast’s vice president of brand partnership and engagement, Matt Lederer, expressed enthusiasm about this renewed collaboration, stating, “We’re not just entering Year 11 of our partnership. We’re embarking on Year 1 of a renewed relationship with NASCAR filled with fresh energy and exciting opportunities to enhance the competition on the track in a way that has never been done before.”
This shift is expected to bring a thrilling dimension to the racing experience, encouraging teams and drivers to push their limits in pursuit of additional points. Ultimately, it aims to intensify the competition and engagement throughout the series.
