TURIN, Italy — On Monday, Juventus secured the services of defender Lloyd Kelly from Newcastle on a loan agreement that extends until the season’s end, with strong indications that the move could become permanent.

The Italian club announced on the transfer deadline day that it has agreed to pay Newcastle a sum of 3 million euros for the temporary transfer. Additionally, there is an option to finalize the transfer for a further 14.5 million euros if specific conditions—deemed relatively straightforward—are met.

In a financial disclosure, Juventus mentioned, “Given the high probability of the conditions for the player’s acquisition being achieved, this transaction for accounting purposes qualifies as a definitive acquisition effective from today for a total amount of 17.5 million euros, plus additional costs.”

Lloyd Kelly, aged 26, primarily plays as a central defender but is also capable of functioning as a left-back. He has gained recognition for his aerial abilities.

Having only joined Newcastle in June, Kelly previously spent five seasons with Bournemouth. Juventus highlighted his qualifications, stating, “Kelly is known for his speed, his ability to build up play from the back and his tactical reading of the game.” They also noted his impressive height of 1.90 meters, which enhances his strength in aerial battles, beneficial during both defensive situations and set pieces.

His agility and versatility in adapting to various tactical setups make him a significant addition to Juventus’ roster. Kelly is now the fourth player to join the club in the winter transfer period, following Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain, Renato Veiga from Chelsea, and Alberto Costa from Vitória Guimarães.
