Swedish tennis player’s suspension cut by Court of Arbitration for Sport

LONDON — The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has decided to lessen the suspension of Swedish tennis athlete Dragos Madaras from four years and six months to a two-year term.

Madaras received his suspension as a result of violating the anti-corruption rules established in tennis. He had achieved a personal best world ranking of 191 as of July 2023. His suspension was primarily due to his refusal to cooperate with an ongoing investigation, which included not allowing his mobile phone to be analyzed.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Monday that the CAS had partially accepted Madaras’s appeal. While they acknowledged his lack of cooperation, they determined that a lesser penalty was warranted under the circumstances.

In a related matter, the CAS rejected an appeal submitted by French player Leny Mitjana, who was facing a 10-year suspension. The ruling came from the International Tennis Integrity Unit.

The decisions from the CAS highlight the ongoing efforts to maintain integrity within the sport, emphasizing the consequences for those who do not comply with established regulations.
