PASADENA, Texas — A dramatic scene unfolded at a band competition held at Pasadena Memorial High School when an elderly man opened fire, prompting swift action from parents and onlookers who intervened to thwart what could have escalated into a more serious incident. The shooting, which resulted in one injury, occurred during an event involving students from multiple districts on Saturday evening.
Authorities reported that the suspect, a man in his 80s, entered the high school and fired a small-caliber weapon. As of now, investigators have not identified a motive behind the attack. According to police statements, the individual injured was a percussion technical consultant associated with the Angleton Independent School District band.
The consultant was struck in the shoulder and was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. The school district confirmed that the gunman did not have any ties to the event, emphasizing the unexpected nature of his actions.
Responding rapidly, a parent managed to tackle the shooter shortly after he discharged his weapon. Following this, the Pasadena school district police, along with numerous bystanders, effectively assisted in restraining him. Pasadena Police Chief Jerry Wright praised the quick thinking of those involved, stating, “Within 60 seconds a suspect was disarmed, and they prevented further shooting by this suspect.”
Furthermore, the Pearland Independent School District commended the bravery of parents who intervened during the chaotic scene, successfully subduing the shooter and holding him until law enforcement arrived. The swift response from the community played a crucial role in controlling the situation.
