LOWELL, Mass. — Aerin Frankel delivered an impressive performance, denying the New York Sirens on four consecutive penalty shots, leading the Boston Fleet to a thrilling 3-2 victory in a shootout on Friday night.
The Boston goalkeeper showcased her skills with 25 saves out of 27 shots faced from New York, marking her 1,000th career save later in the game.
Boston initially took the lead when Alina Müller scored just as the first period was winding down, netting a jailbreak goal with only 13 seconds remaining. In the third period, Hannah Bilka, assisted by Hilary Knight, fired a wrist shot into the net, extending Boston’s lead to 2-0 shortly into the third.
However, the tide turned as the Sirens began to find their rhythm. Sarrah Fillier launched a shot that slipped under Frankel’s pad, allowing Ella Shelton to bring the score to 2-1 with just under six minutes left. In a bold move, the Sirens pulled their goaltender, Corinne Schroeder, for an extra attacker with two minutes remaining. Shelton connected with Abby Roque for a decisive goal that equalized the game at 2-2, sending it into overtime.
The five-minute three-on-three overtime period yielded no goals, necessitating a shootout to determine the victor. In the shootout, Frankel was the star of the show. She made a critical stop on Noora Tulus’s shot and continued her heroics by thwarting attempts from Fillier and Jessie Eldridge. Meanwhile, Müller and Knight capitalized for the Fleet, ensuring their victory.
The triumph granted the Fleet (3-3-2-5) two valuable points, propelling them up the standings to tie with Ottawa for fourth place with a total of 17 points, now only two points behind the Sirens, who sit in third place (4-3-2-4). The two teams are set to face each other four times in the next seven games, including a matchup in Buffalo as part of the league’s Takeover Tour.
