The Chicago Cubs have formalized a minor league contract with right-handed pitcher Brad Keller, which also allows him to participate in their spring training big league camp. The announcement regarding this agreement was made by the Cubs on Friday.
Keller, now 29 years old, had a less than stellar season in 2024 while pitching for both the Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox. His performance included a record of 0-4 and an earned run average (ERA) of 5.44 over 16 games, of which two were starts.
His journey in professional baseball began in 2018 when he debuted with the Kansas City Royals, where he remained for the first six seasons of his career. Across his 166 major league appearances, he holds a career record of 38 wins and 57 losses, with a 4.34 ERA, including 116 games as a starting pitcher.
Keller is now among several non-roster invitees expected at Cubs spring training, joining players like catcher Reese McGuire and fellow right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards.
In a separate move on the same day, the Cubs traded infielder Luis Vázquez to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations. Vázquez had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. The 25-year-old player made his MLB debut in May and during his time with the Cubs, he recorded one hit from 12 at-bats, contributing two runs during his 11 games played.
